Glitchtastic!

Category : entertainment + games + half-life + quake

Every play a video game online and someone is screaming “OMG! HAX!” or “GLITCHER!” repeatedly while asking everyone where the admin is? If not, consider yourself lucky, as those people are highly annoying when you’re attempting to perform something which could be defined as cheating. However, often at the same time it serves no real purpose, gets you killed afterwards, and if you are doing it to cheat rather than show-off or illustrate a point, well expect to find yourself banned. But that’s not the purpose of this post. Glitches within most popular game engines these days are often more ammusing than annoying, especially if they’re in a single-player game. And normally, if the glitch doesn’t repeatedly kill you for no apparent reason, it’s going to help you in some form or another, if at the very least to report the problem in the first place. In any case, I’ve created the following formula:

Speed Run + Trick Jumping + Half-Life 2 = Hillariously glitchtastic!

Hillarious indeed. While new to me, some of these videos appear to have been around for nearly a year if not longer circling the Half-Life communities. But still entertaining enough to share due to my overwhelming curiousity after stumbling across the Revenholm Speed Run (Re-Run) in a related video search. Now for those unfamiliar with Ravenholm, it’s a nightmarish hazzard in the disguise of a large puzzle which takes quite a long time to navigate the first time through. I recall it took me roughly an hour my first time trying to figure out what I had to do, then I saw this video done in under two minutes and I was floored. It looked so easy I had to try it. And after about 10 minutes I realized, it’s not as easy as it looks, while not entirely impossible, it’s just not easy. My fingers were a bit numb and my neighbors below were probably wondering what the hell I was nailing into my floor from all the rapid hammering of my keys just to get onto a rooftop.

Back to the related search, I managed to find Half-Life 2 Done Quick. If Ravenholm can be done in three minutes, well then the entire game can be done in under 2 hours. If you have the time, and you’re patient enough to sit through it all again, it’s worthwhile to see how things get done and how to use the least ammount of ammunition possible. If not, I suggest the shorter out-takes and stunts reel which adds some absurdity to things which can be achieved. In the end, you begin to wonder if there’s a little bit of Quake still left in the mighty Source engine after all. If so, maybe we could have a little Half-Life 2 DeFrag mod like Quake 3 had. Or not.
